Dozens of DC residents denounced Citi and Bank of America financing of coal power plants at over 40 Citi and Bank of America ATM’s in downtown DC Friday. Washingtonians Against Coal (WAC) and others taped off Bank of America and Citi ATMs with climate crime scene tape to expose Citi and Bank of America as the largest investors in the dirty coal industry in the country. As part of the National Day of Action against Coal, WAC joined thousands of people across the United States in telling both Bank of America and Citi to stop funding dirty coal projects, and move their investments towards clean energy.

“The climate crisis we are facing demands that we take action, that we fund climate solutions not 19th century energy technology that is leading us down the path to catastrophic climate change” said one WAC activist.

Action on the ATMs included signs about the banks financing of coal and screen covers with fake buttons describing the bank’s financing of coal and climate change.

Coal-fired power generation is the largest and fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. Coal-fired power plants are directly contributing to global warming and affecting the health of communities across America. Coal is responsible for 40% of US greenhouse gas emissions, for the most toxic mercury air emissions in the country, and for the destruction of countless streams and over 450 mountains in Appalachia.

WAC joined groups from around the country in protesting coal-fired power plants and coal mining as triggers of climate chaos.
